Ya Just Gotta Start

Maybe the hardest part of the creative process, harder than marketing, way harder than creating, is getting your tush into the studio (or into the chair if you are a writer).  Discipline is what separates the amateur from the pro.

Ya just gotta get on it.  Some days, ya just gotta start.

Don't ever think that you can wait for "the muse" to show up.  The muse shows up AFTER you do.  If there is a muse.  Which I doubt.  I'm with Chuck Close on this one:

“The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who'll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself.  "

I just read an old article from Art Business News entitled: "Artist to Artist: How to establish a Daily Creative Ritual".  See,   http://artbusinessnews.com/2012/01/artist-to-artist-how-to-establish-a-daily-creative-ritual

The author is correct; a daily ritual is helpful in not getting distracted and getting yourself into the studio.  My (current) ritual is as follows:

*morning pages (a la Julia Cameron via The Artists Way)

*create a goal for the day/week

*meditate

*sit ups and arm strengthening exercises

*breakfast while reading email, facebook, etc. for no longer than 1/2 hour (I'm setting a timer starting tomorrow)

*CREATE ART!!

What is your ritual or plan of attack or methodology for getting going on your creative endeavor?
