How do you know when you're done with a series?

Moirai #1
How do you know when you’re done with a series? I guess you can just feel it; you just know it intuitively. Perhaps eminent artist Tadashi Hawakawa is right when he told a friend of mine that the real question is, “Is the series done with you?”
I did 4 24” x 36” pieces of art in a series that I called “Noir”. One of them wasn’t ready for prime time in my judgment so I held it back. The other 3 sold. Immediately. Indeed, one of the three I hadn’t even had a chance to get photographed before it sold.
Since then I have hesitated to make another Noir. I’m not really sure why I have hesitated. Maybe it is because the first 3 sold to some folks who are prominent folks and I don’t want them to see similar pieces by me elsewhere, as in someone else’s home. Actually, I don’t know why I worry about this because when I create, each piece is very different from its predecessors. Boy, that’s true even when I want the new piece to be similar to its predecessors.
In any event, after much reflection, I took the not-ready-for-prime-time #4 to my photographer. I picked it up today. Here it is. I’ve called it “Moirai” - destiny.
And I have decided that I am not done with the series, whatever its name, quite yet. I can’t tell you why. I’m just not. I have one more 24” x 36” panel primed and ready to go. Today is the day. #5 comin’ right up!
