Less is More

"Riot #2" (a Riot of Color)

Less is more in art.  That is a lesson that I need to paste up on my wall.  Less is more.

What I mean is that the negative spaces add to the beauty of the piece.  Dr. Wayne Dyer says that it is the spaces between the notes that create the music.  This is true for art too.  The negative spaces create the beauty.  There is something wonderful about the stark contrast between the negative spaces, the blanks if you will, and the colored spaces.

Here's my example.  This morning I created piece #2 of 4 matching pieces.  Piece #1 is lovely.  The colors highlight but do not overwhelm the white which is, in this case, the negative, the blank, space.

In piece #2, I got a bit carried away.  The blue overwhelms the piece, or nearly so.     I'm not in love with it.  So, I'll probably keep it but gesso up a replacement 18x18" panel and do a redo.

Sigh.  Less is more.  Shall I write it on the wall of my studio?
